Did I mention that we love to eat? After the shark and ray feeding, we went on a tourist feeding expedition, a Tahitian picnic on a small motu (island). Note the feast on the table. In front is ahi tuna cooked on an open grill. Yum! There was also Poisson Cru, marinated raw fish that's very popular on the islands. Did you ever try ceviche (pronounced suh-veesh)? Same idea, and delicious. There were things made from breadfruit, taro, plantain, tapioca and more. There were also lots of fruity dessert things.

The "plates" were woven from palm fronds and there was no silverware. We ate with our fingers, or not at all.

Alas, there were no Mai Tais. (Sigh!)

In addition to preparing the food, our hosts also provided entertainment. There was a coconut opening contest, music, dancing (with our participation), and tree climbing (without our participation). Many of the jokes were in French and went right over our heads. Oh, well.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the festivities:

Left: Two "volunteers" struggle to open a coconut.

Right: Native pulls apart coconut with his teeth, extracts the meat, and has time to read "War and Peace" before the volunteers finish.

Phyllis joins the Tahitian chorus line.

Barry. . .uh. . .well, here's Barry.
